Dear Parents
This is a brief introductory letter intended on spreading awareness of the community outreach organization at Kingswood College; The Kingswood College Community Projects Club (KCCPC), a project of the Integrated Community Development Program Trust (ICDP Trust).
The Kingswood College Council supports the ICDP Trust as it believes in the educational value the community projects afford the Kingswood pupils. A constitution was adopted in January 2005 and members of the ICDP Trust management committee meet monthly. Representatives of each project are actively involved in this committee.
KCCPC currently meets every Friday afternoon and consists of 84 members. All members are Kingswood Pupils in Grades 10 to 12. The members are divided into 12 interest groups.
Each interest group has specific functions and tasks to carry out which aid the various ICDP Trust projects. Other interest groups will be added according to the particular needs of future projects.
The KCCPC Interest groups are;
15 Currie Street is a large house with a pre school in the back garden. It is accessible to the Kingswood Pupils and the previously disadvantaged community closest to Kingswood. The ICDP Trust bought the building for R400 000.00 in 2005. So far generous donations from an anonymous donor of R100 000.00 and just less than R70 000.00 from a Methodist church in USA has been received. This invaluable physical resource was officially opened by Mr. Arguile in 2005 and named the Lebone Centre.
An after school care program was identified as one of the most valued services the Lebone Centre could provide. A panel consisting of child welfare, Mrs. R. Kent and Mr. Abe Peterson (from the Centre at that time) organized the admission of the 15 children. These children are between ages 8 and 13 are all socially vulnerable. They attend the ACE project (After School Care and Enrichment Project) every week day from 1.30 – 4.30pm. The Big Sisters/Brothers and Rhodes Volunteers are involved with activities planned for the children.
The children have a meal each day prepared for them by the Centre’s house mother. Food is received from the Kingswood kitchen (left over from the meals) or cooked at the Lebone Centre. We thank sincerely people who have donated a stove, fridge and microwave besides furniture, curtains, blankets, toys, food & clothing. Recently the children made puppets and produced a concert which some KCCPC members attended and enjoyed.
The Service Committee and Mrs Jenny Redpath at Kingswood Junior School have always been involved and their commitment and contributions have been invaluable.
The aim of this letter is to spread awareness and get more people and organizations involved. If you are interested in assisting us in any way please take a look at our website on www.icdptrust.com.
