We are a transformational sporting side that aims to close the gap between rich and poor and black and white in Grahamstown through sports development. Half our squad comes from well-resourced schools in town and the other half from less developed schools.
Our success has been totally outstanding! Since inception in 2002, we have:
-
Been selected to play in the National Schools U19 Basketball Festival in Durban
-
Reached the quarter finals of the National Schools Basketball Festival in our first year of attendance. (2003)
-
Had one player selected for the National All Stars U19 side. (2003)
-
Had five players selected for the Eastern Cape U18 side. (2002, 2006)
-
Won the Engen U18 Eastern Cape finals. (2003, 2004, 2005)
The far-reaching effects of this level of success cannot be underestimated. The Makana Spears players are turning into role models for younger, vulnerable youth in their respective communities, which has had a perceptible knock-on effect on levels of crime, truancy and substance abuse. In addition, we are creating genuine bonds of friendship across divides of colour and privilege, which are inspirational and durable.
We would welcome sponsorship in any format, either financial or in kind such as transport or cost price goods.
Our motto is:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our dark that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people don't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
