Love Reading Club (LRC) Project

The Kingswood College Afrikaans Department Staff, who are Ms. San Knoetze, Miss Karen Roux and Mr. Tyron Scholtz started and established the Afrikaans “Lief vir Lees” programme with the three primary schools we liaise with. This programme allowed for meaningful interaction between the Kingswood College pupils and the pupils from the 3 primary schools. These engagements enable friendships to be formed and the cultivation of a reading culture. We entered a competition launched by the ATKV and are one of ten schools who have received a R5000.00 start up donation. We will be visited by the ATKV who will assess the programme for further prizes.

The supportive reading programme was started this year aimed at fifteen grade 2 learners from the three primary schools. This programme is run by a group of dedicated Rhodes University Volunteers. The Wordworks literacy programme is followed, which focuses on one-on-one instruction. This is very meaningful for the children as this allows their reading to improve and they gain self-confidence. The teachers of these children have reported on their improvement under the programme and have expressed their wish for all the children to be part of this programme.

2010 has definitely been the year of partnerships and collaboration for the ICDP Trust. All projects run by the Trust focus on improving literacy and therefore bringing some hope of making a difference to their school performance and future.
